Shirk means assume a person or other object or a concept as a form of equal to or greater than God. Such presumption can be in terms of valuation, the nature of significance, feeling more like, or excellence, combined with actions that support it. This is what is referred to as "associating God with another God." In other words, assume that a person or other object has the attributes of God, tantamount to Allah.
Allah mentions in the Qur'an that the sin of shirk will not be forgiven:
Allah does not forgive Shirk, and He forgives other than that to whom He pleases. Whoever to Allah, he indeed had a great sin. (Surat An-Nisa: 48)
According to custom, the word "idols" to worship certain objects or beings. But actually, a broader meaning and is not limited to these terms.
In every age, there is always a human being to Allah, take the other gods and worship idol or statues. Idolize something does not necessarily mean that the devotees saying "This god that I worship." Nor does it mean that he should prostrate before him.
In essence, idolatry can mean feeling like someone to something more than a sense of joy to God. For example, someone more like pleasure than the pleasure of God, or more afraid of the man than the fear of God, or love someone more than the love of Allah.
In the Qur'an, Allah states that something disekutukan with God will not be able to help people who mempersekutukannya.
Actually what you worship besides Allah are idols. And you make a lie. It's that ye worship not able to provide sustenance to you. Then ask sustenance from Allah and worship Him and thank Him. Him do is you will be refunded. (Surat Al-Ankabut: 17)
